Petrobas Judge Killed in Planecrash

RIO DE JANEIRO – A Brazilian Supreme Court judge involved in the probe of a $2 billion corruption scandal at state oil company Petrobras died Thursday in a plane crash, his family said.

Authorities said that only one person survived when the small aircraft carrying Judge Teori Zavascki and three other people plunged into the Atlantic Ocean near the coastal town of Paraty.

“Dear friends, we just received the confirmation that my father died,” the judge’s son said on social media.

The plane, a Beechcraft King Air C90, took off from Campo de Marte Airport in Sao Paulo bound for Paraty, on the southern coast of Rio de Janeiro state.

Witnesses said the plane went down amid heavy rains.

Zavascki, 69, was designated by his colleagues on the Supreme Court to oversee aspects of the Petrobras investigation, known as “Lava Jato” (Car Wash).

Dozens of business executives and politicians have been caught up in the scandal. Many defendants have pleaded guilty and turned state’s evidence in exchange for more lenient sentences.
