ASTANA. Jan 11 (Interfax) – It is possible to end international terrorism and extremism only through the joint efforts of all states and international and regional organizations, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev said.

“International terrorism and violent extremism are the principal and most pressing challenges to global peace and security. Crises in many regions of the world result, in the first turn, from the activity of international terrorist groups. We can turn the tide of the ongoing crisis and put an end to this evil only through the joint efforts of all states, international and regional organizations, and other key partners,” Nazarbayev said in his political address to the UN Security Council.

The address, which defined political priorities and practical elements of Kazakhstan’s activity as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2017-2018, has been released by the Kazakh Foreign Ministry.

“‘In this respect, Kazakhstan calls for accelerating dialogue between political and religious leaders, primarily, in the context of violent extremism and radicalism,” he said. “Kazakhstan will pursue this conviction during its presidency at the ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee (1267) [both groups are banned in Russia],” Nazarbayev said.

“In this light, we intend to offer United Nations member countries and the UN Security Council to develop an Astana code of international anti-terrorist operations, which may lay a foundation for forming a global anti-terrorist coalition (network) under UN aegis, which I proposed to create in my speech at the 70th session of the UN General Assembly,” the Kazakh president said.
